Stretch Marks
What are Stretch Marks?
Stretch marks are dermatologic conditions brought about by damage to the elastin fibers present in the skin. Elastin fibers are responsible for giving the skin its elastic properties, allowing it return to its original state despite being stretched. The repair for damaged elastin is considered to be very difficult and this explains why stretch marks are almost always considered to be permanent especially if the person does not take the necessary steps to have them removed.
Appearance of Stretch Marks
These marks are usually asymptomatic in nature but initial signs point toward the appearance of fine lines in the form of striae, with reddish or purplish discoloration but will later on evolve to become silvery white that looks glossy and shiny. Grooved indentations on the skin are visible to the naked eye in the form of parallel lines that seemingly appears to be wrinkled. The person may feel itchiness on the site of the stretch marks and the urge to scratch is often unbearable, oftentimes leading to skin abrasions. Common areas predisposed to the development of stretch marks include the abdomen, breasts, upper portion of the arms, buttocks, and thighs.
Causes of Stretch Marks
The causes of stretch marks come from a variety of contributing factors. For people who have undergone drastic changes in weight, the sudden and extreme weight loss or weight gain causes the skin to stretch. In adolescent individuals where sudden vertical and horizontal growth may take place, the skin in the buttocks and the thighs are also predisposed to undergo stretches. Stretch marks are also associated with the use of certain medications such as corticosteroids that are taken by mouth or applied to the skin. Understandably, pregnant women commonly develop stretch marks on the abdominal area.
Prevention of Stretch Marks
Preventive strategies for stretch marks include maintaining ideal body weight, drinking plenty of water since this helps in the maintenance of ideal skin structure, and a diet that includes food that promote healthy skin. Examples of these foods are fish, nuts, citrus fruits, poultry products, and those that are rich in protein. It would also help to lessen one’s daily intake of caffeinated beverages such as coffee, tea and soda.
Treatment of Stretch Marks
Treatment for stretch marks would require the use of topical lotions or creams and moisturizing oils that can be bought over the counter. For those who want to remove stretch marks faster, and have the money to spend, laser surgery, chemical peeling of the skin and dermabrasions are options to consider.
